Katya Komarova was born and raised in Russia. As a creative child who loved to dress up, sing and dance, she graduated from Moscow State University of Culture and Arts with a degree in acting. But nonetheless, she went on to fulfil her childhood dream of becoming a model, beginning her career in fashion. She became one of the most in-demand models in Moscow, travelling to different countries all around the world. During her travels around Thailand in 2010, she met a local artisan, who taught her how to make a leather bracelet. When she returned home to Russia, she toyed with the idea, crafting a number of leather bags. She posted pictures of these bags on Facebook and, to her surprise, she started to receive orders. But it was only when a designer friend of hers used her bags in his runway during a fashion week that she realised this is what she wanted to do.
Wanting to further her knowledge and experience, she studied bag design in Florence, Italy at Accademia Riaci. And only a few months later, she presented her first collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia.
In 2013, Katya relocated to Australia for love. She launched her namesake label in 2014 presenting limited edition capsule collections. Today, the Katya Komarova brand is focussed on minimal, feminine, versatile handbags and small leather goods of the utmost quality.
Katya Komarova exists ethically and sustainably, taking a responsible and
considerate approach to the environment. We produce limited quantities and
manage our stock carefully to ensure we are not contributing to waste.
Katya Komarova handbags use natural materials and are stitch-free, enabling
every piece of leather to be reused, if needed. We are dedicated to creating
the best possible sustainable way of production and care about the life cycle
of our products.
Through our love and respect for this planet, we have pledged to promote
sustainability. We are committed to the journey towards creating beautiful
fashion but not at the cost of the earth.
With an inherent love for natural materials, all Katya Komarova bags and
accessories are made of vegetable-tanned leather. The process of vegetable
tanning leather prepares the material in the most natural way using
ingredients such as bark mills, woods, roots, leaves and fruits. Our leather is
sourced from a local Adelaide supplier, who sources it from Italy and other countries.
To further explore environmentally-friendly materials, we recently introduced our non-leather range made of 100% wool. The luxurious wool is sourced by our Melbourne partners from Germany and has full certification.
Katya Komarova mindfully manufactures in Adelaide, where
Katya is now located. We work with local suppliers who laser-cut pieces to be
assembled by hand in our studio.
